No. 1323 (untitled) is a color field painting from 2015, inspired by Mark Rothko's masterpiece "Untitled (White, Blacks, Grays on Maroon)" from 1963 (Kunsthaus Zürich).

Mark Rothko was convinced that the tragic expression was more comprehensible in the dark paintings, as he revealed to Katherine Kuh. Katharine Kuh (born Woolf; 1904–1994) was an art historian and curator from Chicago, Illinois.

This is an oil painting, but acrylic-based chalk paints were also used. The painting was repeatedly reworked over years of attentive observation and experience to finally achieve a deep black and, at the same time, warm, absorbing colour tone. A black that is capable of immersing the mind in the deep spheres of the universal self.

Blue-violet tones from deeper layers expand the colour spectrum and have an almost subconscious and diffuse effect on the viewer's perception.

The finely ribbed black is reminiscent of Pierre Soulages' Outre-Noir paintings and lends the tranquil work a sense of moderate movement and energy. Subtle gloss nuances based on alcyde resin further enhance the perception of its haunting presence.

A veiled white cloud hovers in the upper area, forming a powerful counterpoint to the deep black and managing to attract the eye's attention without any claim to dominance. Absolutely nothing clouds the peaceful mutual harmony.
