No. 1006_Flowing river, from 2018, forms part of my series of colour-field paintings.
In the colour field at the top of the picture, the earthy, reddish-brown shade has a robust, physical presence, accentuated by a striking deep-brown silhouette.
Velvety soft with a watercolour-like consistency, the opal-green colour field in the lower part of the picture, with its landscape-like expanse, exudes an ethereal atmosphere.
Between the two blocks of field and meadow flows a revitalising, pale blue river, whose luminous, translucent intensity irresistibly draws the eye into the depths.
A fiery-red bar at the bottom of the composition provides a complementary counterpoint to the green expanse, supporting it like a plinth and lending it light and energy.
The landscape-like scene is embedded in the darkness of a pearly-violet frame and appears to float within it.
Inspired by Mark Rothko’s masterpiece ‘Untitled (red-brown, black, green, red), 1962 (Fondation Beyeler)’, the work has its own ‘style’ and a distinct message. At its heart, however, is not the ‘figure’, but the search for a metaphysical language, rooted in the introspective, flooding light and the atmospheric aura that the painting, after years of observation and revision, is able to convey so convincingly.
